Are you having fun yet? Check your bottom line.

I’m all for fun! My work in keeping the employees clients want in their organization engaged so that they stay to keep producing those spectacular star quality results indicates that I’m not the only one. Here’s some news for other fun mavens that are committed to breakthrough results in the workplace from Inc.com:

With labor markets tight, business leaders understand that fun can tip the scales when all else is equal. Fun not only lures employees, it also helps them acculturate, which becomes more important as businesses become more virtual. And, of course, fun is associated with creativity. Not everyone can quantify the return on their Lego sets, their giant slides, their movie nights, their costume contests.

BUT… before you get all happy and ready to pull out the silly string, the article also says…

The common practice of treating sick cultures with a fun-graft–parties, silly hats, visits from Mister Softee–is insulting to employees and vaguely grotesque. For fun to thrive, meaningful work, competent management, fair compensation, and mutually respectful employees are table stakes. If you lack any of those, start there.

Just like a person, a sick corporate culture needs to be internally aligned and brought to health before going out to play. Have a creative, outrageously successful and, yes, fun day.
