Leadership – Take A Step Forward – Or Else
If our conversation is that we are leaders and no one is following us then what kind of leaders are we? Perhaps the kind that sees the direction of a parade and jumps in the front of it? Empty bravado.Ego-reinforcement. If we have not moved anyone forward then our conversation is an empty one.
If we are the kind of leaders that are willing to declare a reality, a new possibility, even when others, circumstances, history or “herstory”, sends the message that “You must be kidding. That reality or possibility will never happen.” Then we are courageous. Kudos.
We can’t generate transformation with the SOS (same old stuff). Whether it’s a corporate culture change, a healthy family reunion for a dysfunctional family, building a new business, generating a truly inclusive organization where a racist sexist one was before, etc. it is impossible if we insist on arguing for the status quo. Flying backwards and flying in place is a physical impossibility.
If we are not going forward as leaders and making certain that we are taking others with us because of our authenticity, vision, and caring, then we are just standing still, watching life happen, victims of our unwillingness to be in action Nice dreamers.
Lets face it, if no one is following us then how are we being and what are we doing? There is magic in our being leaders creating miracles.
Okay, being leaders is hair-raising. Going into uncharted territory and taking others with us will keep us up at night. But that is what we’ve signed up for when we say we want to be the change that changes the world.
