Race Relations and the Illusion of Difference
Like Katrina, the faltering economy has placed everyone in the same boat and in some parts of the United Stat es this has served to break up some racial barriers. Very few families have been able to the
escape this recession with its’ massive job loses and the devaluation of stock portfolios and property values. So oddly enough it seems like a given that in tough times many of us want to pull together, understand, and do right by each other.
The question is why does it take a disaster for our real humanity to show up. Most times we are focused on an illusionary difference between us, Income, Education, Race, Gender, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Age, etc. building camps of diversity dimension distinctions that only serve to heighten our stress and our alienness. It would seem that life would be a lot less stressful if we are being respectful, accepting, supportive, understanding, and trusting of others searching for what we have in common to keep us together rather than what keeps us apart. Routinely we choose the path of toxic self-induced stress (yes some natural stress is good for growth) when our lives are in relatively good shape, we live like its too good to last. When times are tough we all sing…
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…John Lennon “Imagine”
Or we don’t. How about we all just get along all the time.
