The term diversity is taking on new distinctions. When it comes to boards tackling issues like funding, recruitment and delivery of services, thinking that challenges the status quo is important. One of the newer terms being applied to this is “diversity of thought”. Boards should be applauded that have this as well as visible diversity. Which brings me to a question asked at my presentation.

Is “We have diversity of thought” an adequate response to the question, “Do you have a diverse board?”

In real terms, yes. Board leadership can answer any question in any way they choose. However, answering this question in this way is a “cop out” when this response is all that is given. Questions to follow up with are…

• What is the cultural, gender, racial, (and so on) profile of your board? (The diversity dimensions identified by Marilyn Loden & Judy B. Rosener in their Workforce in America are useful guides in determining the profile of a board. )
• Is the board inclusive? (Inclusion is different from diversity.)
• Does your board reflect the community in which you live and/or serve?
• Do you have the skill sets that will enable you to deliver on your mission?
• Are you attracting diversity among your volunteers and suppliers?
• Would that answer alone be enough to get grants?

We have difficulty finding diverse board members who have the financial resources to give at the level we require, what outreach strategies can you recommend?

Participants brainstormed and responded:

• Know the centers of influence: Churches, chambers of commerce
• Do a board matrix. Identify the gaps
• Communicate WIIFT (what’s in it for them)
• Solicit sponsorships that take the place of the financial responsibilities
• Allow in-kind services
• Reach out at grad events, trade schools
• Use ads
• Do cross training with other boards
• Ask previous board members to come back
• Use social media
• Have contributions be more than financial
• Consider advisory boards without a requirement for financial giving
• Have a board development committee

After nearly four decades—three of which were at the helm—Susan left Essence Magazine in 2007 to lead the National CARES Mentoring Movement, a volunteer-driven organization of African American men and women who are dedicated to securing our country’s most vulnerable and precious young people.  In just five years and under Susan’s leadership, CARES, now located in nearly 60 cities, has recruited and placed more than 160,000 African American mentors with children who need little more than a caring, stable and wise voice to help guide them across the often difficult terrain they call their lives.

In recognition of all she has done—and all she continues to do—the National Civil Rights Museum, located at the Lorraine Motel where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, bestowed upon Susan the 2011 Freedom Award for Activism.   In so doing, they said that the National CARES Mentoring Movement “speaks to the legacy left for all of us by Dr. King, who was an advocate for all people, but especially our young people.”  The Museum, named by USA Today as one of America’s Top Ten Treasures, has welcomed more than 3 million visitors since they first opened twenty years ago.

The Freedom Award has been bestowed upon the most inspiring leaders of our time since the Museum’s opening in 1991.  For their contribution to philanthropy, humanitarian work and social justice, past honorees have included President Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, James Farmer, Thurgood Marshall, The Dalai Lama, Diane Nash, Marian Wright Edelman, Bono, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Oprah Winfrey, Ruby Dee, Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, B. B. King, Stevie Wonder, President Lech Walesa, Myrlie Evers Williams and Elie Weisel among others.   In November of 2011, in recognition of their twentieth anniversary, their honoree was my friend, my colleague, my mentor, Susan L. Taylor.

asha bandele is a journalist and the author of five books, including two award-winners, The Prisoner’s Wife: A Memoir, and the novel, Daughter.  asha’s work has been widely anthologized and has been taught in classrooms from Harvard University to the University of Ankara, Turkey.  She’s published articles in The New York Times, Essence, Vibe, Family Circle and scores of other publications.  In addition to writing, asha serves as VP of Communications for National CARES Mentoring Movement, Director of the Advocacy Grants Program at the Drug Policy Alliance but is most proud of being mother to her pre-teen daughter whom she is raising in Brooklyn, NY.

communities that are up to taking on a positive, responsible and leadership role in having our communities work for everyone. This effort is a continuation of “Conversation on Leadership” workship that followed the “Positively Powerful Women Awards Luncheon” this past May. In looking at the positive things happening in the world, we came across this article in the New York Times about the people of Saranac Lake, New York, a small recreational community with about five thousand residents who went about starting their own department store after Ames Department Store chain closed in a bankruptcy process.

What stood out for us about this story was that they did not take the easiest way out or seek a short term solution, rather what they are attempting to do is something difficult and when they succeed, it just may be the best thing they ever that could have happened to this small town.

Every new piece of information we receive is begging for us to make a decision, an up or down vote, as to what our next step should be. We used to be able to follow a plan, or a strategy linking our decisions to those that followed our planning, you know “staying course”. This is nearly impossible now for individuals and at best difficult for organizations. We’ve always known that plans are flawed (planned for what can be “control”) and we are beginning to understand that we don’t control much of anything. I’m not at all suggesting that we are unable to make a difference in world, in fact each of us has our version of the iPod  embedded in us with a playlist ready to inspire us to make the most positive difference we can. The issue is how do we do this now as individuals and more importantly as communities? Just saying ” it’s not what I want or expected” is not enough. How do we together (all of us) create what we do want,What’s next for us?

There are behind the scene team members that you will see on stage like Greg Williams – George’s partner, Dr. Kwa David Whittaker, Veronica Conway (Conference Coach) and me Dr. Joel Martin (Director of Education)…and then there are the multitudes of  sponsors, faculty members and guests who are so vitally important. This is a birthday card of sorts to everyone, to an organization and importantly to the man who dreamt it into existence. Many many more Dr. Fraser. PNC Conference Preview

There is always something that we didn’t know or  a different culture to understand and diversity provides us with the opportunity to become smarter and wiser. We find that the issues that confront us daily are often resolved outside of our personal comfort zone via communication with people or communities we don’t know well.

Businesses, regardless of their size are seeing the advantages of diversity. Now more than ever, consumers of our products and/or services are coming with a wide range of needs supported by culture, race, gender and geography. We are living in a diverse and global economy and isolation is impossible and unhealthy.

As more and more women join the ranks of executive business leaders, they bring with them their unique understanding of how to build and nourish relationship, the importance of community and their sustainability. Women are leading the way towards a global recovery.

No matter how much we may think that we are prepared and no matter how carefully we attempt to anticipate the future, “nothing ever goes as planned.” This is not just a saying but the truth. Rarely do plans ever go uninterrupted.We can always count on the unexpected. The only thing that stays the same is change – whether it is the cost of health care, the raising or lowering taxes, or importantly, the “elephant in the room” that we would rather ignore as though this would make it disappear - the disease of Alzheimer.

How do we deal with aging and our declining mental capacity to think, to dream, to relate? We would like to believe that our brain power is within our “sphere of control” forever the same. However, we must face it: There is scarce attention being focused on Alzheimer, it is something we are not planning for. It has been largely ignored. Dementia, memory loss or Alzheimer will likely interrupt your plans.

While there is a movement to create homes and memory support programs for those with Alzheimer, ABHOW’s Grove for example, more is needed. Everyone of us would like to count on a cure, a therapeutic environment, creative activities, and well-trained staff who will help us feel safe, secure and valued. However at this moment, today, we must consider these facts from the Alzheimer’s Association:

• While thankfully the death rates for cancer, heart disease and HIV/AIDS is going down, Alzheimer’s remains the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression.An estimated 10 million baby boomers will develop it.
• If you don’t know anyone with Alzheimer you will.
• If you don’t know of anyone who has had to care for some one with Alzheimer, you will.
• Alzheimer is a disease that will impact us all.
• In addition to the human toll, over the next 40 years Alzheimer’s will cost the nation $20 trillion, enough to pay off the national debt and still send a $20,000 check to every man, woman and child in America.
• The first baby boomers are turning 65 this year. And while Alzheimer’s is not normal aging, age is the greatest risk factor for the disease.

The 2011 Positively Powerful Woman Award for Nonprofit Leadership will be given to entrepreneur, speaker and author Kristi Lee for her leadership role in the founding of the National Association for Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) Phoenix Chapter, the NAAAP Mentor and Professional Development Programs; for her service to the State of Arizona as Commissioner of the Governor’s Asian American Advisory Council, and for her  co-founding of the global organization Bridging The Gap Consulting which works to facilitate educational, trade and developmental interests of United States individuals and the people of China.

Kristi has an extensive business background with more than 20 years in marketing and retail. Her previous corporate experience includes responsibility for product and marketing decisions for more than 2,300 Albertson’s Food and Drug stores in 38 states, and negotiations with national brands such as Johnson & Johnson, Proctor & Gamble, Maybelline and Revlon.

Kristi is  the Vice Chair for NAAAP.  NAAAP Phoenix’s mission is to be the proving ground for Greater Phoenix Asian American Professionals, forging leaders of tomorrow through professional development, cultural awareness, community service and mentorship.  She helped create the Professional Development program in 2008 and created the vision for the NAAAP Mentorship Program in 2009.  She is also the facilitator for Public Speaking workshops for the NAAAP leadership team. Kristi has been a Commissioner of the Governor’s Asian American Advisory Council, and a member of the Business On Board program sponsored by the Arts and Business Council of Greater Phoenix.

Kristi is a founding partner of Bridging the Gap Consulting, a firm that specializes in cultural sensitivity training, conversational business Chinese, corporate and individual training on how to conduct business in China, Her company also coordinates Chinese students with exchange programs as well as summer camps and provides translation services for all versions of media and presentations.

Kristi recently co-authored, License to Dream – Every Woman’s Guide to Financial Freedom Through Network Marketing, which was launched worldwide. She and her co-authors were featured in the highly respected Networking Times March 2011 issue, “The Rising Economic Power of Women”.  She is an accomplished speaker and sales trainer and has great passion for empowering women around the world.

Five years ago, faced with her corporate job moving out of state and going through a divorce, she went on to build a successful network marketing business with Send Out Cards, an international greeting card and gift company.  She has team members in 30 states, Australia and Canada and is in the top 250 income earners of the company.  In December 2010, she received the prestigious “Freedom Award” voted by the top leaders of Send Out Cards in Arizona for “Exceptional Leadership and Dedication”.
