In our last Conversation On Leadership, we had a dialog about Original Thought, what it was and how it impacted our lives and effectiveness as Leaders. Rather than having something happen with newscasters giving us their editorial opinions, tweets stating the trends and face book friends that we liked and gave a thumbs up, we spoke about the power of making up our own minds and being intentional about it; creating the new and different even when the mechanisms from here to there were unknown.

Dr.Joseph Riggio

In that spirit I offer you a a very entertaining and short video from TEDx Greece “Stepping Forward, A Hero’s Journey”. Dr. Joseph Riggio, the speaker, says we are only using 5% of our brains. He gives counsel on dealing with change. And, he talks about how we were educated and educate our young.

I suggest that leaders create miracles through their original thoughts. Other wise there is no difference made, rather sameness and business as usual. What do you think? View the video and make up your own mind. Don’t take my word for it.

We have been on a mission about having a better understanding of leadership and its relationship to building vibrant communities. Recently we’ve begun doing small breakfast workshop with the broad objectives of building

communities that are up to taking on a positive, responsible and leadership role in having our communities work for everyone. This effort is a continuation of “Conversation on Leadership” workship that followed the “Positively Powerful Women Awards Luncheon” this past May. Our next workshop is Dec. 12th at ASU Mercado Phoenix

In looking at the positive things happening in the world, we came across this article in the New York Times about the people of Saranac Lake, New York, a small recreational community with about five thousand residents who went about starting their own department store after Ames Department Store chain closed in a bankruptcy process.

“take control of our future and help our community,”

What stood out for us about this story was that they did not take the easiest way out or seek a short term solution, rather what they are attempting to do is something difficult and when they succeed, it just may be the best thing they ever that could have happened to this small town.

The lesson that Saranac Lake teaches us about community is that we are far more powerful cooperating with each other then we could ever be hiding behind our superficial distinctions that serve a singular purpose of dividing us.

There are many key people on the FraserNet team that you won’t see on stage like Alexandria Boone (Conference Manager), Bernadette Mayfield, Charmaine Ward (Volunteer Manager) and the Fraser family members especially Jean.

You’ve heard it all…”Signs of a weakening economy”… “Raging downward swing”… “Driving Wall Street down in light trading”…”Cascade of devastatingly awful economic news”… “We are living in a time of great challenge, unemployment, hard times…”

So, how are you feeling? Do you feel safe or fearful? Secure or insecure? What are you experiencing physically in your body? Warm or cold? Slight heaviness in your chest region? How’s your self esteem? A little shaky or steady as a rock? What’s the status of your vision, mission, and purpose? Going full steam ahead or on the back burner “until conditions change.”

It’s a heck of a lot easier to feel secure, enlightened, and visionary when things are going good. But I’m in the business of supporting people to feel great and be successful regardless of the circumstances. So here are a few tips for today, for all people in any life status. Take care of yourself! And those around you.
Improve your mood: Watch out for a craving for “comfort foods” like the carbohydrate-rich mashed potatoes, candy bars, buttered pop corn, pizza. These “goodies” can be “baddies” by providing only temporary emotional comfort. They will increase your blood sugar levels for a quick boost but two or three hours after eating these foods, your insulin levels will soar, causing your blood sugar levels to plunge….which leads to a cycle of more depression, stress, and bad mood feelings. Plus the pounds will add up and this is not the time to be overweight. You need to look your best and feel your best!

Take care of that gorgeous body of yours. Drink plenty of water. Eat your veggies and fruits. Choose foods with protein to strengthen and maintain your muscles. Foods such as almonds, fish, sushi and lean beef help to reduce mental stress by keeping your body physically healthy. (More food tips at www.eHow.com.)

Stay positive! Do what you can about what you can influence. Given the choices available to you, what do you chose? Your choices are always in your domain. Here’s some ideas:

Give: What brings you joy? Volunteer. When you focus out through giving to others you will feel better. Volunteering is a plus on your resume too.

Mistakes: Treat them like a learning opportunity. Imagine how few inventions there would be if inventors believed that their experiments that failed were mistakes!

Give up being perfect: With perfection, there is usually no room for error or mistakes because we are judging according to standards that must be met. Excellence is a more workable goal. When you desire excellence, you will be more apt to learn, be energetic, and accept yourself and others. There are many ways to be excellent…and usually only one way to be perfect.

Don’t feel sorry for yourself or others for too long: Pity parties don’t serve us. I would much rather have compassion from others than have someone feeling sorry for me. How about you?

Take Action: It is fine to ask the question, “What’s wrong?” The key is not to dwell on it. That leads to analysis paralysis. Get up! Get busy! Get out! Be good to yourself. Balance the activity with times of restoration, relaxation…too much of either will be counter productive.

Someone’s Fault or “My Responsibility”: Believing that it is another’s fault when you don’t get the results you say you want removes you as the power source. In this thinking, your results are external to you. Your lack of success is caused by other people and you therefore have nothing to do with it as a ‘failure’ or importantly, a future successful outcome.

When you can consider your results your responsibility, you own the power even when this realization does not feel good to you. There is something that you can do about the result – even if only learn from it and use this knowledge in the future. This does not mean, however, that others do not impact your results; they do. But, you are the positively powerful person directing the course of your life through your choices.

Dr. Cathy Clardy Patterson, Pastor, Fountain of Life Church will receive the first Positively Powerful Woman Award for Spiritual Leadership for her vision as expressed through the founding of Fountain of Life Church and her global ministry; for serving on the ministerial staff at Tanner Chapel AME Church in Phoenix; for her academic credentials and contributions; for her success in the world of business as only the second African American woman in U. S. history to be named a Managing Director of a major investment bank; and for being a role-model as a community leader.

Rev. Dr. Cathy Clardy Patterson founded the Fountain of Life Church (“FOL”) in 2006 with 12 individuals “like the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 Disciples they set forth in obedience to the Word of God.” Rev. Patterson believes that the church, following in the footsteps of Jesus, must meet people where they are and minister to their needs.

Rev. Patterson entered the ministry in 1999 and was granted a license to preach by the Presiding Elder of the Phoenix-Albuquerque District of the Desert Mountain Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (“AMEC”). Rev. Patterson was ordained by the AMEC in 2002 as an Itinerate Deacon and upon her successful completion of the denomination’s 5-year course of study she was ordained as an Itinerate Elder in 2004. Rev. Patterson earned her Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Rev. Patterson’s academic credentials also include: a Juris Doctorate from The Harvard Law School; a Master of Business Administration from The George Washington University (where she was designated a University Fellow by the faculty); a Bachelor of Science in Management and Industrial Relations from Minnesota State University at Mankato where she was the first graduate of the University’s Honors Program.

Rev. Patterson has had a wide-ranging career in law and finance. She practiced law at major firms in both Washington D.C. and New York. Rev. Patterson eventually was lured to Wall Street where she held a series of progressively responsible positions at two of the largest investment banks in the world. During her tenure on Wall Street she closed more than $16 billion in complex structured securities transactions. Ultimately she became only the second African American woman in U. S. history to be named a Managing Director of a major investment bank.

Rev. Patterson moved to Arizona to accept a position as a Sr. Vice President of ING /Pilgrim Securities. Currently, in addition to her pastoral duties she is the CEO of a consulting firm.

Rev. Cathy has always given back to the community. Since her arrival in Arizona she has served on the ministerial staff at Tanner Chapel AME Church in Phoenix where in addition to having the opportunity to preach and teach the Word of God she served as the Vice Chair of Tanner Community Development Corporation.

Rev. Patterson has also been active in a number of civic organizations, having served as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Scottsdale Cultural Council, a member of the Advisory Board for the University of Phoenix and a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee for Arizona Opera. She is currently the Chair of the Board for Arizona Cares, Inc, and a member of the African American Christian Clergy Coalition.

Rev. Patterson has been happily married to Mr. Ross Patterson, Jr. for 21 years. Mr. Patterson has a heart for mission work whenever there is a need he is the first to respond. His recent missionary endeavors have included extensive work with the Lost Boys of the Sudan, survivors of Hurricane Katrina and developing an outreach ministry for men.
