How to create a new career with a retirement transition coach

There are all sorts of challenges when you’re faced with retirement. The non-financial ones can diminish the financial ones if you’re not prepared. This is where having a dedicated retirement transition coach can reduce the stress of change, give you great ideas, ask questions that open the door to the future or be your accountability partner.

Plan ahead for your new-found freedom

In retirement, there are no reviews, prescribed activities, lunches, work you feel is important to do. That might seem like a wonderful thing now. However plan ahead because otherwise you might find that you’ve wasted the first few years of retirement, fallen into a rut, missed connecting with others, or become a couch potato.

This is where a retirement transition coach is useful. With a retirement transition coach, you’ll be able to take “leaps forward” planning and getting into new work and non-work activities that are meaningful and productive. You’ll have a neutral coach who shares your goals with you and wants you to win in this important time of your life. Remember the work, persistence, and stamina it took to get the career going? Retirement takes work too. You deserve an empowering, experienced, resourceful, success-oriented coach in this transitionary process.

Women – want to give to yourself but don’t? 7 ways to cure this.

There are two questions I ask my women coaching clients and the guests of my women’s training.

Joel leading class This is the first one, “Do you give to yourself the way you give to others?” 9 out of 10 times, the answer is “no.” Doesn’t matter where she stands in life. Some men do this too, but I most often hear this from women.

Whether it’s you or someone you care about and maybe worry about, why is this? What can she do about it? What can we do about it?

One of the breakthrough conversations I have is based on this tried and true formula: Event—> Beliefs —> Emotions —> Behaviors (actions we do or don’t do, when your belief is fixed, it becomes a habit and unconscious to you) —> Consequences (the personal pay off) —> Impact (on others).

So if the action is “not giving to herself the way she gives to others,” let’s reverse the formula…What’s the source of the belief? Where did it start? What events? Here’s what I have learned. They say, “I don’t give to myself because…”

  • It was how I was taught to be – it’s expected. It’s what I saw my mother do.
  • I don’t feel worthy.
  • I was taught to go it alone… because there was no one there to help me.
  • It’s a luxury. I can’t afford it.
  • I would be being selfish.
  • It feels good to give. (Yes, and this doesn’t answer the question. I prompt for why this doesn’t include her.)
  • I’m humble. (Being humble does not mean suffering and giving up your personal power.)

To give to oneself would be a big change for the women who have this embedded belief. But imagine for a moment that they do make this change… how would they be (and perhaps you be)? More energy, better health, happier, sexier, more peaceful, and less stressed?

Suggestions on what to do:

  1. Tithe for you. 10% of what you make goes in your goody jar that you spend on you. Same for when you do something for others. Make a note about it with a promise of something that you will give to you.
  2. Treat yourself like your own best friend.
  3. Let someone give to you. People feel good when they give! Being a receiver is very different from being a taker.
  4. Learn to ask for what you want.
  5. Practice rest and renewal.
  6. It doesn’t matter when or where you learned it; it’s a belief, not a fact. Challenge that belief.
  7. Get an accountability partner who will assist you in giving to yourself. Find a coach.

You don’t have to go at this alone!

The beauty of empowering-based coaching is that you can achieve a new life and perspective for yourself. You are your own best friend, and once you realize and achieve that, you will be empowered to take on anything life throws your way.

Women, take care of your bodies. When intuition fires up, you must act.

Women, take care of your bodies. When intuition fires up, you must act.

serena and baby olympia

In our most recent history about women’s health, we’ve learned that two of our women heroes thankfully trusted their intuition about their bodies. They trusted their gut instincts and insisted on having their physical vitals checked as a result of their pregnancies.

“What Serena Williams’s scary childbirth story says about medical treatment of black women….Black women are often dismissed or ignored by medical care providers. Williams wasn’t an exception” (Source)

As a result, we have Serena, going into the US Open, ready to rock the world once again as the Champion that she is and with a healthy beautiful baby girl and Beyoncé, looking gorgeous as ever and singing, rocking her twins. You can read about Beyoncé in “Her Own Words: Her Life, Her Body, Her Heritage”

Ladies, we must trust our intuition when it comes to our health. It may seem strange to say, but we are the only ones inside our bodies. Health comes first in this domain that we rule. If who you go to for your medical care isn’t listening, you must find someone who will. Surround yourself with people who lift you up not bring you down. Eat as healthy as you can – fruits, veggies, eliminate the sugary drinks. Know your medical history. Ask questions and talk – say what hurts. Listen, learn, speak and act in your own best interests.

Reciprocity Is A Powerful Key To Your Business Success

Reciprocity Is A Powerful Key To Your Business Success

When I opened the Triad West Positively Powerful Program division some time ago, I knew that sponsorships and marketing would be important in the development of my Woman Awards, Summits and other events for transformational leadership. Being a tenacious learner and collaborative person, I asked a very successful and influential corporate woman who was a great sponsor and philanthropist, “How do you make an ask (the term used for requesting funding)?” She said one word, “Reciprocity”.

Reciprocity: mutual dependence, action, or influence. The practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit.

I’ve never forgotten this. At the time, like many entrepreneurs with a good idea, I didn’t have a lot of marketing dollars to build on but what I did have were my own unique ways to authentically reciprocate. They have proven to be beneficial in building my relationships and businesses. Here’s how reciprocity works. It is not just about the money.

  • Successful businesses are based on successful relationships.
  • Advocate for other people that you believe in. In the case of a company, tweet about them.
  • Do virtual introductions and include why you are introducing them to each and what’s great about them.
  • Respond authentically and in a positive manner to those that write, call, or email you. Do this consistently. Your silence could close the door on future beneficial opportunities for you and if nothing else make them wonder about the quality of the friendship.
  • Support others financially to the extent that you can but don’t jeopardize your own financial situation. The same is true when your time, treasure, and talents are requested.
  • Be kind and considerate. Don’t criticize or gossip about others.
  • Say “no” with grace, empathy, and compassion when you are not the asker but the one who is being asked.
  • You are a philanthropist – own it – and give what you can financially, with support, with wisdom, and/or by inspiring others. All of these are ways to make meaningful deposits into the banking account of your life. Reciprocity is giving back and paying it forward with intention.
