One Reality for Equal Opportunity for Women
Alice Eagly, Professor of Social Psychology at Northwestern University, speaks about what is missed when talking about the “Glass Ceiling” for women and that, she says, is that there are challenges faced by women at all levels of the workforce – not just the “C” suite. It is understandable that women want to downplay and ignore gender differences early on in their careers. And it’s understandable that they want to plow ahead as if challenges don’t exist. However this might be exactly why there are fewer women at the top.
“A strong educational base doesn’t always translate to an easy path up the corporate ladder.”…. “It’s a progressive drop out that occurs for many different reasons.” Alice Eagly Ph.D
Eagly goes on to say “even while women aren’t rising to leadership positions with parity, studies of female leaders show they have precisely the managerial style the modern era demands.” We agree. The argument needs to be made again and again that female leadership is better for business and that the path to senior leadership is a journey not just a destination.
