There was a point at which there was no Dr. Maya Angelou Mosaic line for Hallmark. Imagine that. Then Marquetta Glass, business innovator and visionary marketing professional at Hallmark introduced an exclusive business opportunity for the company with Dr. Angelou, the renowned international poet laureate. As a friend of Dr. Angelou she guided this innovative and creative partnership producing the marketing, communication, and commercially successful Life Mosaic Brand, an eight digit million-dollar performance for happy card senders the world over.

Diversity in Recruitment – a Definite Plus!

Diversity in Recruitment – a Definite Plus!

Of course, your new hires will be qualified for the needs of your business, but they don’t necessarily have to look or behave the same to be a good fit. We can no longer assume that recruiting those with similar looks or beliefs is the only way to achieve harmony in the workplace.

The inclusion of those from different races, religions, etc. can create an alive, balanced place to work. The world around us has become more people varied, so it would only make sense that a place of business should mirror the same variety by matching the local demographics as much as possible. Once hired, the new employee should be integrated easily into the company culture and with talented personnel, daily operations will flow regardless.

A mix of workers can generate the energy, loyalty, and longevity that is needed to compete in the marketplace. Often new ideas evolve from workers that are well past the “new” stage and are comfortable in their work world. Energy is given to creativity and enhancement of products as they become more comfortable. Feeling valued and listened to, employees work harder, feel connected and responsible.

Why narrow the field when looking for new employees? Excluding workers due to gender, creed or ethnicity, narrows the possibility of recruiting the top candidates from the local worker pool. Spread a wide net. Ask for referrals from current employees. Reach out to organizations to let them know that your business wants to support the community by employing qualified people in the area. A little effort can mean big results.

A diverse, connected workforce wins.

Molina Fine Jewelers: Changing The World One Jewel At A Time

Mr. MolinaAlfredo J. Molina, Chairman and CEO, Molina Fine Jewelers: “My inner voice says that I’m here to make life better for others. I spend 80 percent of my time on charities including Teen Life Line, Childhelp and Gabriel’s Angels.”

On June 20th and June 21st, the seven 2013 Positively Powerful Woman Award recipients, previous Award recipients, media, committee members and friends got an experience of what it means to be one of the jewels whose lives are enriched and enlightened through Molina Fine Jewelers sponsorship.

The Positively Powerful Awards Presentation and the Molina Broach: We were honored to have Connie F. Wilson, Senior Vice President, and Mark Skarupa, Vice President as Awards presenters. One of the highlights of the Awards was their presentation of the Molina Broach designed by Molina Fine Jeweler’s artisans. Great care was taken with translating the Awards logo into a three-dimensional work of art.

The Molina Broach has sculptured hands surrounding a beautiful blue sapphire representative of the globe. The sapphire rests in the center of a cross. The blue sapphire is the perfect gem to select for this very special Broach. Sapphires are known as the stones of strength, wisdom and serenity.  The blue sapphire is an especially good stone for those who are intent on finding spiritual truth. The rays of the star represent faith, hope, and destiny. After Mark Skarupa’s introduction and Connie Wilson’s surprise presentation of the Broach (and the Molina Unforgettable Perfume) to the 2013 Awards Recipients,  the previous year’s Awardees couldn’t help but wonder whether they would be able to receive one, and who could blame them, the Positively Powerful Woman Broach is magnificent.

The Positively Powerful Reception: Through Mr. Molina’s generosity we were also treated to a reception the evening before the Awards in the impressive inner sanctum of the beautiful House of Molina, a landmark building on Camelback Road. Surrounded by exquisite jewelry in displays, we toasted the accomplishments of the many women servant-leaders attending, enjoyed delicious food, collaborated and connected with each other and our hosts. Mr. Molina wanted us to feel like empresses and we did. This was a first-ever reception for the Positively Powerful Woman Awards and will never be forgotten.

A mission of excellence and service: An organization’s mission defines the reason they exist and what is important to them. The Molina Mission is to be “The hallmark of excellence in the world of fine jewelry exceeding the expectations of our customers and potential customers by delivering an unforgettable experience, unparalleled service, exceptional jewels, magnificent craftsmanship, all with value beyond price, while acting on our commitment to enhance the welfare and interests of our local community.” The Positively Powerful Woman Awards recipients and committee experienced the benefits of this mission in action. Thank you Alfredo J. Molina and Molina team.

If you too would like a treat, visit the House of Molina, 3134 East Camelback Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85016 and/or visit their website. Mark Skarupa, Vice President, is a Certified Gemologist Appraiser and Registered jeweler with the American Gem Society and an expert authority on image consulting and the “Reflections” presentation. Connie J. Wilson, Senior Vice President is enormously Philanthropic. She is GIA Certified and an accredited jewelry  professional. They, along with the other 40+ Molina Fine Jewelry personnel, embrace the values, vision and mission of Molina Fine Jewelers, which is “Molina Fine Jewelers believes that every individual is a precious jewel and it is Molina’s commitment and social responsibility to ensure that they become brilliant.”

Traveling for Business or Pleasure? “Flight Back!”

I read some useful tips and reminders in Costco.com’s Consumer Connection provided by consumer advocate David Horowitz. Because of the amount of time I spend on the road and likely you do too, I am repeating them here. There are more in the archives on Costco.com. Enter “Connection” at Online Edition then search “David Horowitz”. That is the source of the below questions to ask your airline representative before you  need them:

  • What types of in-airport vouchers do you offer in the event of a canceled or delayed flight?
  • What is your rebooking procedure in the event that a flight is canceled?
  • Who are your partner airlines and do they have  seats available in the event of a canceled or delayed flight?
  • Are you able to provide trip vouchers for future travel as compensation for my inconvenience?
  • If I am stuck in a particular location, what are your policies with respect to hotels, food and transportation?

This one is from personal experience: If you happen to miss a flight, attempt to rebook within one or two hours to another flight. Ask about the “flat tire rule”.

“The so-called “flat tire rule” is just an informal understanding within some of the major airlines that if you should arrive late for your flight — but not more than two hours late — due to some event you really couldn’t avoid (like, say, a flat tire), they’ll consider putting you on the next flight to your destination on standby without paying a rebooking fee or the difference in the fares” (Source: Airefarewatchdog).

I learned about this informal policy from the travel agency that booked my flight and IT WORKED. I was thrilled as I was able to get home in time for my flight out the next day to another engagement.

I don’t know about you but I appreciate Southwest Airlines not charging for baggage or change fees. Do you think the other carriers will follow suit?

Do you have travel tips to share with other road warriors and fun-time travelers? Please provide them and I’ll be happy to share (and use) them. Tips received so far are below.

Alethea Session, Travel tidbit: Did you know airplanes have powerports? My motto is “Know before you go”. Check out airlines with powerports and find a seat with this option at http://www.seatguru.com/articles/in-seat_laptop_power.php Carla D Washington, MBA These are extremely helpful tips.

And you want to support theirs. Imagine starting your week off with this great group of folks, stimulated by two informational and inspirational facilitators who launch the conversation.
